The Retreats and Other Programs

The Profound Treasury Dharma Foundation’s mission is to share the living tradition of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche’s teachings as widely as possible. We offer 9-day retreats based on Trungpa Rinpoche’s text, The Profound Treasury of the Ocean of Dharma—these are the Profound Treasury Retreats in Maine and Colorado. We also sponsor lectures, seminars, study groups, and other practice and study programs based on Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche’s teachings.

JUNE 12-21, 2020 IN SACO, MAINE

The Profound Treasury Retreat held annually in Saco, Maine

A unique opportunity to engage in intensive study and practice in a contemplative environment
The Profound Treasury Retreat is a 9-day Buddhist meditation and study retreat based on the Buddhist teachings of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. We welcome meditators of all ages and traditions to join us in studying and practicing in a contemplative environment on the coast of Maine.
From 1973 to 1986, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche offered his students a 3-month retreat called Vajradhatu Seminary, and the teachings from these seminaries have been compiled into three volumes known as the The Profound Treasury of the Ocean of Dharma. The Profound Treasury Retreat is modelled on these Vajradhatu Seminaries, using The Profound Treasury texts as the basis for study.

The atmosphere

The spirit of beginner’s mind

The Profound Treasury Retreat is infused with the spirit of beginner’s mind. The intimate atmosphere created when new and senior students practice together as beginners is one of the hallmarks of the Profound Treasury Retreat. This is the ground for participants to cultivate their understanding and experience together—to explore, question, and learn from each other.

The teachers

Judy Lief

The nine-day Profound Treasury retreats in Maine and Colorado are led by Judy Lief, a close student of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, who trained and empowered her as a teacher. Judy has been steeped in Chögyam Trungpa’s teachings for more than 45 years, and has edited many of his books including The Profound Treasury of the Ocean of Dharma volumes. At ease and down-to-earth, she sets out Trungpa Rinpoche’s teachings and explores student’s questions freshly and simply, in a way that illuminates the teachings for new and seasoned practitioners alike.

Electives classes at the retreats, as well as other practice and study programs, lectures, and seminars, are led by senior students of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and scholars with support from Judy Lief and the Profound Treasury Dharma Foundation.

All Are Welcome

In this time of challenge and heightened uncertainty, we invite and welcome people who are interested in exploring the path of dharma and the teachings of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche.  We welcome people who are inquisitive and skeptical, and we welcome people who feel shy and tentative. We welcome people with a sense of humor. We welcome those feeling tender and open. You are welcome to come as you are.

Whatever your race or color, you are welcome here.

Whatever your ethnicity, nationality, or citizenship, you are welcome here.

Whatever your religious affiliation or political view, you are welcome here.

Whatever your gender identity, you are welcome here.

Whatever your wealth, age, physical challenge, or social standing, you are welcome here.

You are welcome to study and practice with us.

Dearest Community Members,

We hope this note finds you and your loved ones safe and in good health.

We are writing to all of you on behalf of the Profound Treasury Retreats’ Leadership to let you know that, in response to the expanding coronavirus pandemic, we have decided to postpone our retreats in both Saco, Maine and Crestone, Colorado until further notice.

This was not an easy decision. Especially in these times of sheltering at home and social “distancing”, we long to be with one another in person, practicing and studying together. However, in light of the serious health and economic concerns facing the world right now, this decision to postpone seems to be necessary and proper. Please be assured that any deposit that you have made will be refunded, or, if you wish, applied toward a future PTR program. If you have a question about your deposit please feel free to contact Sue Rhodes

We are hopeful that we can resume our in-person retreats in 2021. In the meantime, we are working together to develop alternative ways of practicing and studying together. We have formed an “Online Committee” to work with our Administration in developing a virtual 2020 Profound Treasury Retreat.

When so-called “normal life” is disrupted, it can be a time of uncertainty, fear, and confusion—but it can also be an opportunity to slow down, to reflect, and to reach out to one another. We want to assure you that we will be there for you in any way that we can.

With a deep bow,

Jacqueline Gallo, Chair, Profound Treasury Dharma Foundation Board Judy Lief, Head Teacher
