The Profound Treasury Retreats

A unique opportunity to engage in intensive study and practice in a contemplative environment
The Profound Treasury Retreat is a 9-day Buddhist meditation and study retreat based on the Buddhist teachings of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. We welcome meditators of all ages and traditions to join us in studying and practicing in a contemplative environment.
From 1973 to 1986, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche offered his students a 3-month retreat called Vajradhatu Seminary, and the teachings from these seminaries have been compiled into three volumes known as the The Profound Treasury of the Ocean of Dharma. The Profound Treasury Retreat is modelled on these Vajradhatu Seminaries, using The Profound Treasury texts as the basis for study.

The atmosphere

The spirit of beginner’s mind

The Profound Treasury Retreat is infused with the spirit of beginner’s mind. The intimate atmosphere created when new and senior students practice together as beginners is one of the hallmarks of the Profound Treasury Retreat. This is the ground for participants to cultivate their understanding and experience together—to explore, question, and learn from each other.

The teachers

Judy Lief

The nine-day Profound Treasury retreats in Maine and Colorado are led by Judy Lief, a close student of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, who trained and empowered her as a teacher. Judy has been steeped in Chögyam Trungpa’s teachings for more than 45 years, and has edited many of his books including The Profound Treasury of the Ocean of Dharma volumes. At ease and down-to-earth, she sets out Trungpa Rinpoche’s teachings and explores student’s questions freshly and simply, in a way that illuminates the teachings for new and seasoned practitioners alike.

Electives classes at the retreats, as well as other practice and study programs, lectures, and seminars, are led by senior students of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and scholars with support from Judy Lief and the Profound Treasury Dharma Foundation.
